In the late nineteenth century, a man by the name of Sir Dudley Marjoribanks decided to create, in his opinion, the ultimate breed of retriever. On his Scottish estate Guisachan he cross-bred a Flat-Coated Retriever to a Tweed Water Spaniel and in later generations added Red Setter and Labrador Retriever to the mix, eventually ending up with the modern day Golden Retriever. The AKC recognized them as a breed in 1913.
Goldens, as they are affectionately called, are intelligent, affectionate and gentle natured. They are generally easy to train, they love making their people happy and make great family pets. They are very tolerant of children and when raised with them become best friends and sometimes partners in crime. They also get along with other pets when introduced young age. They are well suited to a variety of activities and make a good addition to many different life styles: from hanging out at home to camping and hiking. They are also used as emotional support and guide dogs.
Goldens see everyone as a potential friend so they don’t make good guard dogs.
